QUANDO O HOMEM SONHA – A MAN HAS DREAMS – O CRIADOR 1

“How can I believe in God when just last week I got my tongue caught in the roller of an electric typewriter?”

Choveu demais? Caramba. Sacrificamos a pessoa errada.

Religion was born when the first man looked around and didn’t understand anything. The harvest was good, so God is happy. A devastating earthquake? God is angry with something. No rain? Maybe a human sacrifice may please God and maybe he will change his mind? Too much rain? Aw gosh. We sacrificed the wrong guy. In other words, men adapted the notion of God to his own conditions, or created God according to his own image, telling the opposite to make it easier to swallow.

I heard this fable long ago: on a paper sheet two dots were minding their own business, when a sphere started to cross the paper. As it touched the sheet, the sphere looked like a dot, and filled one of the dots with joy. Wow! We got company! But the intruder became a circle, growing and growing... Then shrinking, shrinking, until it became another dot, and then disappeared. The two dots fell on their knees amazed by the phenomenon they had just witnessed, promising to spread the news all over the paper sheet.

We have long passed the naive time to consider our tiny planet as the center of the Universe. Certainly we live in a paradise that took billions of years till the first man would come down the trees and learned to talk. But the notion God using his own image as a model to create the human beings still remains while we are stuck in millenary superstitions even against scientific evidence. Someone, someday, will say: but God is bigger than his creation; or, we shouldn’t try to shrink him into our mediocrity. A human being stuck in three dimensions has no means to understand what transcends time and space. Just like those two little dots on the sheet have no elements to understand a sphere.

Continuaremos – To be continued.
