A família do meu pai tinha dois ramos: Stülpen (simplificado para Stilpen) e Kersten, ambas chegando ao Rio de Janeiro em 1827 pelo navio francês Justine. O destino era a Austrália, mas o imperador D Pedro II precisava de mão de obra para terminar uma estrada na serra, e contratou a todos. Eles ganharam empregos, casas e carinho. Ficaram por aqui mesmo...
My father’s family came from two branches: Stülpen (simplified as Stilpen) and Kersten, both arriving in Rio de Janeiro in 1827 on the French boat Justine. They were heading to Australia, but emperor D Pedro II needed working force to build a road in the hills, so everyone was hired. They got jobs, nice houses consideration. So they decided to stay here anyway...

Petrópolis é um pedacinho do céu distante 50 minutos do Rio. Muitas pessoas moram lá e trabalham na capital, pois é mais rápido chegar ao Centro do que muitos bairros, como a Barra da Tijuca ou o subúrbio. Além disto, o clima é ótimo e a vida mais barata. A tradição alemã fez de Petrópolis um foco musical. Meninos e meninas começam cedo a tocar ou cantar. Belonging to the Canarinhos or Meninas Cantoras is a common aspiration among the kids.

E temos o Bauernfest na última semana de junho e a primeira de julho. Um festival tipicamente alemão, com polcas, cerveja e comida típica. As famílias têm seu dia de desfile, vestindo as cores e brasões das cidades de origem.
And then we have the Bauernfest in the last week of June and the first week of July. A German festival, filled with polkas, beer and typical food. The families have their parade, wearing the colors and symbols of their original cities.

E então é Natal. Eu passei a maioria dos fins de ano no meio dos primos, comendo o pão feito no forno a lenha e bebendo leite de verdade (hoje parece água misturada com farinha). A árvore de Natal era um pinheiro enfeitado com frutas e doces. A iluminação vinha de pequenas velas, deixando tudo muito mágico! Os primos cantavam as canções de Natal em alemão, e eu só ficava ouvindo... Natais simples da minha infância, pobrezinhos e imensamente felizes!

The Christmas tree was a real pine adorned with fruits and candies. Illumination was provided by small candles, coloring the room with magic! My cousins sand carols in German, so I Just listened... Eu estou me aproximando dos 69 anos e ficando meio rabugento e nostálgico. Mas não tenho culpa de ter passado a juventude nas décadas mágicas entre os 50 e 70, época turbulenta onde a criatividade parece ter atingido o topo.
I’m getting near my 69 and becoming grumpy and nostalgic. But it’s not for me to blame spending my youth through magical decades between the 50’s and 70’s, turbulent years when creativity seemed to have reached the top.
Naturalmente há exceções honrosas, especialmente produções de cinema e TV, onde a técnica primorosa se alia ao talento dos roteiristas.
Of course, there are honorable exceptions, especially movie and TV productions, where a developed technique joins the talent of story-tellers.

A MORADA DA FELICIDADE – MY LAUGHING PLACE – YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU
Meu pai era o mais solicitado garçom do Copacabana Palace. Ele era o favorito de várias personalidades, como Eddy Duchin, Edith Piaf, Nelson Rockefeller ou Walt Disney. Eu ainda tenho guardados muitos autógrafos, como os de Neil Sedaka, Nat King Cole, George Boulanger e tantos outros! Bem, eu não virei um cantor, um banqueiro nem um violinista, mas certamente o gene que carregava a informação da animação foi passada para mim.
My father was the most appreciated waiter in Copacabana Palace. He was the favorite of such personalities as Eddy Duchin, Edith Piaf, Nelson Rockefeller or Walt Disney. I still keep many autographs, as Neil Sedaka, Nat King Cole, George Boulanger and so many others! Well, I didn’t become a singer, banker or a violinist, but certainly the gene containing the information of animation has been transferred to me.

A MORADA DA FELICIDADE – MY LAUGHING PLACE – ART DIRECTION EXCELLENCE
O que realmente me atrai nos parques de Orlando e em especial no complexo Disney é a excelência no item direção de arte. Não é apenas o cuidado com o detalhe, mas o trabalho que vai desde a concepção até a realização esmerada e a capacidade de consertar o que não deu certo. Estas equipes sabem muito bem que um erro vale por mil acertos.
What really astounds me in Orlando theme parks and in special Disney complex is the search for excellence when art direction is involved. Not only attention to the details, but the heavy work from conception to the careful production and the capacity to fix what didn’t work. These teams know so well a mistake is worth one thousand successful rides.

Na última viagem que eu fiz, levei um amigo muito relutante em relação ao mundo disneyano. Pedrinho entendeu imediatamente a razão da minha paixão pelos parques! Last trip I made, I took a reluctant friend about the Disneyan compound. Pedrinho immediately understood the reason of my passion about the theme parks! To give you a hint, he would sit all day long at the City Hall, breathing the past. In the map bellow, look for letter A, down right.

Os membros dos parques se esforçam para que cada um, individualmente, tenham uma estadia perfeita. Isto realmente aconteceu com o meu amigo Mario, que deixou cair seu óculos no laguinho do It’s a Small World, e o gondoleiro não o conseguiu resgatar. O Mario deu o nosso endereço do hotel e esqueceu o evento. Dias depois, já no Rio de Janeiro, ele me ligou para que eu o encontrasse em sua casa. A administração do parque mandou para ele um par novo de óculos de valor superior, italianos. Eles foram ao hotel e descobriram o endereço dele! E um cartão com o texto: “Lembranças do Mickey Mouse!”

This actually happened to my friend Mario, Who dropped his sunglasses into the pond of It’s a Small World ride, and the gondolier wasn’t able to find. Mario gave him our hotel address and forgot all about it. Days later, already in Rio de Janeiro, He called me to meet him at home. The Magic Kingdom administration had sent him a new pair of expensive Italian sunglasses! They had checked at the hotel his address! And a card with the message: “Best regards from Mickey Mouse!”

A MORADA DA FELICIDADE – MY LAUGHING PLACE – WITH A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK
No momento em que eu escrevo, o relógio vai dar 11 horas e 11 minutos do dia 11-11-11. Como estamos no horário de verão, não tenho certeza se o destino vai consertar a diferença. Mas vou tomando minhas providências... Todos os dias eu ouço a minha música da sorte, diretamente do antigo Carrossel do Progresso.
The moment I’m writing this, the clock is about to strike 11 o’clock and 11 minutes on 11-11-11. We are in the summer’s saving time, but I’m not sure Fate will consider the difference. But I must do something... So, like every day, I enjoy my lucky song, directly from the good and old Carousel of Progress.
O parque Disneylândia surgiu na época mágica que vão dos anos 50 até a metade dos 60, quando o mundo perdeu a infância. Acompanhávamos o progresso pela TV, o que já era um milagre.
Disneyland was born in the magic era from the 50’s to the mid-60’s, when the world lost its childhood. We followed the progress on TV, and believe me, this already was a miracle.
