FESTIVAL DE ROCK - PERPETUUM JAZZILE

Chegamos ao fim da nossa resenha sobre o rock e o pop com este coral da Eslovênia fundado em 1983 por Marko Tiran. Como o nome indica, a base é o jazz, mas conseguimos uma homenagem aos Bee Gees e outra ao Brasil, em especial ao seu maior compositor, o genial Ary Barroso, com licença dos deuses Villa-Lobos e Tom Jobim. Assim, aproveito para fechar os meus favoritos com o som eterno do velho Ary através da excelência dos estúdios Disney (Você Já Foi À Bahia? ou The 3 Caballeros).

We are getting to the end of our fast trip through rock and pop with this Slovenian choir founded in 1983 by Marko Tiran. As the name suggests, their basis is the jazz, but we have found a tribute to the Bee Gees and another to Brazil, in special our greatest composer, the genius Ary Barroso, with the blessings of the gods Villa-Lobos and Tom Jobim. So, I close the list of my favorites with the sound of eternal old Ary through the excellence of Disney Studios (The 3 Caballeros).

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - SPARKLETONES

Nos anos 40 o country era chamado de caipira (hillbilly), que aos poucos foi integrando o rhythm and blues, o boogie-woogie, resultando numa alegre mescla chamada nos anos 50 de rockabilly. O estilo ingênuo foi se sofisticando através das décadas e desaparecendo. Entre os conjuntos de rockabilly se destacam os Sparkletones, da Carolina do Sul, formado por garotos entre 13 e 16 anos. A data é 1956. No ano seguinte, eles gravaram Black Slacks, contando com a então desconhecida figura do canadense Paul Anka, mais os originais Joe Bennett, Wayne Arthur, Howard Childress e Jimmy Denton.

 

In the 40’s, country music was called hillbilly, a gender that slowly added rhythm and blues, the boogie-woogie, resulting a fun mix called in the 50’s as rockabilly. The naive style was sophisticating through the decades and disappearing. Among those rockabilly bands one can highlight the Sparkletones, from South Carolina, formed by kids from 13 to 16. It was the happy 1956. Next year, they recorded Black Slacks, counting with the unknown Canadian artist Paul Anka, plus the original Joe Bennett, Wayne Arthur, Howard Childress and Jimmy Denton.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - LOS LOBOS

David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano e Steve Berlin se reuniram em 1973 para continuar a tradição americana de importar ritmos e adaptá-los à própria cultura. Muitas levas de artistas latinos já haviam enchido os sonhos americanos da sensualidade do bolero, do merengue, do calipso, do reggae ou do samba. Ritchie Valens, por exemplo, nos anos 50, mesmo dentro da sua breve carreira, estourou com a folclórica La Bamba, apimentada para o gosto americano. Afinal, o Tabasco nasceu no Texas. Los Lobos ficaram conhecidos mundialmente pela participação no filme La Bamba, que retrata em cores vivas a carreira de Valens, culminando com o acidente aéreo que nos roubou também os talentos de Buddy Holly e Big Bopper em 2 de fevereiro de 1959; o dia em que a música morreu.

 

David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin joined in 1973 to continue the American tradition of importing rhythms and adapting them to their own culture. Many waves of Latin artists had already filled the American dream of sensuality through the bolero, the merengue, the calypso, the reggae or the samba. Ritchie Valens, for instance, back in the 50’s, even though he had a brief career, revived the Mexican folk La Bamba, with tons of pepper to the American taste. Remember, Tabasco sauce was born in Texas. Los Lobos became worldly known by their participation in the picture La Bamba, painting in lively colors the drama of Valens, whose life was cut in a flight crash that also stole the talents of Buddy Holly and Big Bopper in February 2, 1959; the day that music died.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - FLEETWOOD MAC

A segunda metade dos anos 60 foi pródiga no surgimento de bandas baseadas no virtuosismo e na pesquisa de novos caminhos. Em 1967 Peter Green, John McVie, Jeremy Spencer e Mick Fleetwood formaram o grupo cujo tem inspiração óbvia nos sobrenomes dos dois componentes que ainda permanecem, pois entraram Stevie Nicks e Lindsay Buckingham em 1974 em substituição aos outros dois.

 

The second half of the 60’s was particularly generous to the blooming of bands based on virtuosi and research of new boundaries. In 1967 Peter Green, John McVie, Jeremy Spencer and Mick Fleetwood formed a group whose name has obvious inspiration on the last names of two players who are still on tour, since Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham joined in 1974 substituting the other two.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - GORILLAZ

A computação anda em saltos tecnológicos impossíveis de serem acompanhados. Nos anos 70, na Feira da Providência da Lagoa, foi apresentada uma inovação que prometia mudar a rotina dos usuários: o jogo Pong. Prometeu e cumpriu. Hoje não se imagina a vida sem computação nem Internet. Gorillaz nasceu em 1998, casando o rock com o desenho animado, isto é, Damon Albarn e Jamie Hewlett. 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle e Russel são os personagens desta banda que jamais envelhecerão.

 

Computing zooms in technological jumps impossible to be followed. In the middle of the 70’s, in a Rio de Janeiro fair, we were introduced to an innovation that promised to change our routine: the video game Pong. Promises accomplished. Nowadays we can’t imagine life without computers or Internet. Gorillaz was born in 1998, marrying rock and cartoon, namely, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel are the characters of this band never to grow old.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - EARTH, WIND AND FIRE

A primeira pergunta que me ocorre é: onde está a água? Maurice White, Wade Flemons e Don Whitehead são os três elementos que em dois anos se despediriam. Outro grupo recrutado por Maurice também não passaria de dois anos, até que, em 1973, finalmente se junta ao reformado Earth, Wind and Fire o elemento que faltava, a kalimba (um instrumento africano), garantindo a estabilidade e o sucesso que dura até hoje.

 

The first question is obvious: where is the water? Maurice White, Wade Flemons and Don Whitehead are the three elements that would say goodbye in two years. Maurice recruited another group, but it also would last two years till, in 1973, finally joins the reformed Earth, Wind and Fire the missing link, the kalimba (an African instrument), granting stability and success that lasts to our days.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS

Gladys, seu irmão Merald Knight e os primos Edward Patten e William Guest se juntaram em 1953 quando o rock ainda não tinha este nome. Dona de um balanço que era reservado aos negros, foi um dos baluartes da Motown na difícil época da Invasão Britânica. Ganhou um Grammy em 1985 pela interpretação de That’s What Friends Are For, ao lado de Dionne Warwick, Elton John e Steve Wonder. Os sucessos do grupo começaram com Every Beat Of My Heart, seguindo-se Letter Full Of Tears, Givin’ Up, Everybody Needs Love e a música postada aqui, I Heard It Through The Grapevine. Mas o maior sucesso de Gladys foi convencer o poderoso Barry Gordy a contratar os Jackson 5.

 

Gladys, brother Merald Knight and cousins Edward Patten and William Guest joined in 1953 when rock had not this name. Owner of a beat only reserved to blacks, this group was one of the Motown weapons in the hard years of the British Invasion. She won a Grammy in 1985 for That’s What Friends Are For, with Dionne Warwick, Elton John and Steve Wonder. The early hits of the band started with Every Beat Of My Heart, then Letter Full Of Tears, Givin’ Up, Everybody Needs Love and the song posted here, I Heard It Through The Grapevine. But Gladys’ biggest hit was to convince powerful Barry Gordy to offer Jackson 5 a contract.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - THE NELSONS

Quando o maestro Ozzie Nelson casou-se com sua crooner Harriet, não tinha idéia que estava iniciando uma dinastia. Logo o pequeno Ricky brilhava no musical da MGM A História de Três Amores (1953), e junto com seu irmão David, a família iniciava uma série de sucesso na ABC, As Aventuras de Ozzie e Harriet. Ricky teve uma carreira de destaque até a sua trágica morte em 1985, quando o avião que o levava para um show teve uma pane e caiu. Ricky deixou quatro filhos, entre eles os gêmeos Gunnar e Mathew, que continuaram com a dinastia dos Nelsons no palco,

 

When the conductor Ozzie Nelson married his crooner Harriet, he had no idea they were beginning a dynasty. Soon little Ricky was shining in MGM’s The Story of Three Loves (1953), and together with brother David, the family starred a successful TV series in ABC, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Ricky had a wonderful solo career until his tragic death in 1985, when the plane taking him and his crew to a show crashed. Ricky left four kids, among them the twins Gunnar and Mathew, who continued the Nelsons dynasty saga on stage.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - SAM THE SHAM AND THE PHARAOHS

Domingo Samudio formou em 1961 este grupo com nome estranho, inspirado em Yul Brynner, o faraó Ramsés II dos Dez Mandamentos. Na ocasião eram apenas os Pharaos, mas dois anos depois, com novos membros, logrou colocar o seu Wooly Bully 18 semanas entre os 100 mais da parada. Esta musiquinha é uma daquelas que ficam martelando na cabeça e merece estar neste festival por contraste! Os Pharaohs ainda emplacaram outra comédia chamada Little Red Riding Hood (Chapeuzinho Vermelho), contando a historinha do ponto de vista do lobo.

 

Domingo Samudio formed in 1961 this group with a weird name, inspired in Yul Brynner as the pharaoh Ramses II in Ten Commandments. The were just the Pharaohs, but two years later, with new members, managed to insert Wooly Bully 18 weeks among the 100 best. This is one of those songs that keep banging your memory so it deserves to be here by contrast! The Pharaohs would even hit another comedy called Little Red Riding Hood, telling the tale from the wolf’s point of view.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - BILLY DEAL AND THE RHONDELLS

Billy Deal e mais onze se juntaram em 1965 numa banda onde se destacavam os instrumentos de sopro. Seus sucessos não passaram de três nos Estados Unidos mas I’ve Been Hurt fez certo furor nas discotecas brasileiras. Não temos registros no YouTube desta música, mas conseguimos uma apresentação ao vivo de Billy.

 

Billy Deal and eleven more joined in 1965 in a band highlighting horns. They just scored three medium hits in the States but I’ve Been Hurt was requested constantly in Brazilian discotheques. We have no live archives of this song in the YouTube, only a performance featuring Billy.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - JETHRO TULL

Destaque para Ian Anderson que, em 1967 se juntou com Mick Abrahams, Glenn Cornick e Clive Bunker para formar o Jethro Tull, cujo nome vem de um agricultor que inventou uma máquina de semear. JT foi uma das primeiras bandas a inserir compositores clássicos como Bach no seu repertório, como depois fizeram o Focus, o ELO e o Pink Floyd. Seu álbum Aqualung foi o lançamento mais controvertido, mas era presença obrigatória em qualquer coleção.

 

We must highlight the multi-talented Ian Anderson who, in 1967 joined Mick Abrahams, Glenn Cornick and Clive Bunker to create Jethro Tull, whose name comes from a farmer who invented a seeding machine. JT was one of the first bands to include classical composers Bach in their repertoire, as later did Focus, ELO and Pink Floyd. Their album Aqualung generated a lot of controversy, but it was a needed piece in any collection.

Rhythm and Blues é uma das raízes do rock and roll e era considerada coisa de “preto”, apenas apreciada por brancos de bom gosto. The Clovers se juntaram em 1946 originalmente com Harold Lucas, Billy Shelton, Thomas Woods e John Bailey. A primeira grande chance só surgiu em 1951 no teatro Apollo, ainda como The Four Clovers. Como eu tive a oportunidade de presenciar, o público do Apollo é muito seletivo, e só aceita artistas de talento (em 2002 tive a sorte de assistir ao Harlem Story). Seu grande sucesso foi Devil or Angel, mas nós postamos Little Mama. Divirta-se!

 

Rhythm and Blues is one of the roots of rock and roll and was considered “black” stuff, only enjoyed by some white experts. The Clovers was formed back in 1946 originally by Harold Lucas, Billy Shelton, Thomas Woods and John Bailey. Their chance came only in 1951 at the Apollo, as The Four Clovers. As I could witness, Apollo’s audience is very selective, and just hail talented artists (in 2002 I had the chance to see Harlem Story). Their big hit was Devil or Angel, but we have here Little Mama. FESTIVAL DE ROCK - GARY LEWIS AND THE PLAYBOYS

Um dos tesouros nacionais americanos, sinônimo de comédia: eis Jerry Lewis. Filho de um apresentador de vaudeville (Danny), enfrentando seriíssimos problemas de saúde, ele nos legou 70 títulos (segundo o imdb) de pura arte. Mas também nos brindou com a arte e a alegria do seu filho Gary; em 1965 formou um grupo com os Playboys que durou até 1969, mas teve tempo de emplacar alguns sucessos como Everybody Loves a Clown, She’s Just My Style, Greengrass e a música que postamos aqui, This Diamond Ring. O conjunto apareceu num dos melhores gags do cinema em A Família Fuleira e em diversos especiais da TV, como o Shindig!

 

One of the national treasures, synonym of comedy: that’s Jerry Lewis. Son of a vaudeville entertainer (Danny), facing the most heavy health problems, he left us 70 titles (according imdb) of pure art. But He also gave us the art and joy of his son Gary; who in 1965 formed a group with Playboys that lasted till 1969, but had time enough to hit the spot with Everybody Loves a Clown, She’s Just My Style, Greengrass and the song we posted here, This Diamond Ring. The group had a cameo appearance in one of the finest movie gags in The Family Jewels and many TV specials as the popular musical Shindig!

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - DINO, DESI E BILLY

Qual o tiro mais certeiro no incerto mercado de entretenimento? Os filhos de celebridades; é claro. Dino já carregava o apelido do pai, Dean Martin, e Desi já era Arnaz Jr. Billy Hinsche, bem, este era apenas um amigo. Bem que poderia ser o filho do Jerry Lewis, Gary, mas este já estava fazendo sucesso com o seu conjunto e até aparecendo nos filmes do pai. Para quem não se lembra, Desi Arnaz era o marido de Lucille Ball em I Love Lucy. Infelizmente a carreira de Dino foi interrompida por um desastre aéreo, e o trio estava desfeito. Temos um trechinho de I’m a Fool, um esquete de Dino com o pai, e outro de I Love Lucy, quando Lucille vai dar a luz ao bebê mais esperado da América.

 

What could be the most certain shot in the uncertain entertainment market? Celebrity kids; of course. Dino carried his dad’s nickname, Dean Martin, and Desi was already an Arnaz Jr. Billy Hinsche, well, he was just a friend. They could have chosen Jerry Lewis’ son, Gary, but this one was already a hit with his band and even making cameos in his dad’s comedies. Tp those who don’t remember, Desi Arnaz was Lucille Ball’s hubby in I Love Lucy. Unfortunately Dino’s career was interrupted by a plane crash, and so the trio was over. We have here an itsy bit of I’m a Fool, a sketch featuring Dino and Dean, and another I Love Lucy clip, when Lucille is rushing to have the most expected baby in America.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - THE OSMONDS

Os Osmonds foram uma das primeiras famílias de meninos cantores da TV, depois que a família Von Trapp imigrou para terras menos conturbadas. Eles iam em caravana para o sonho do ouro na Califórnia, nas Viagens de Jamie. Jamie era nada menos do que o ator Kurt Russell. Eles eram Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, Donny, Jimmy e Marie, sendo que os três últimos foram entrando aos poucos. Há quem os compare ao Jackson 5, mas as origens dos dois grupos é diametralmente opostas. O que os unia era a capacidade de vender discos: os Osmonds chegaram à marca dos 102 milhões. Postamos aqui o sucesso Crazy Horses e um trechinho de Travels of Jaimie McPheeters.

 

The Osmonds were one of the first families of singers in TV, after the Von Trapps immigrated to peaceful lands. They joined a caravan to fulfill the dream of getting rich with the California gold, in the Travels of Jaimie McPheeters. Jaimie was boy actor Kurt Russell. The Osmonds were Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, Donny, Jimmy and Marie; the last three made their debut as soon as they could walk. People compare them to the Jackson 5, but the origins of the two groups is totally opposed. The only similarity was both had a talent to sell LPs: the Osmonds sold 102 million. FESTIVAL DE ROCK - THE FLOWER POT MEN

No meado dos anos 60 um movimento crescia no Ocidente, que moldaria todo o mundo que conhecemos. Os jovens já não acreditavam mais nas promessas do sistema e se aventuravam em novas concepções. Ao invés da guerra, fazer o amor; a droga como a chave das portas da percepção; os ensinamentos de Jesus vistos através de um novo ângulo: os vendilhões do templo se aproveitaram da falta de embasamento da juventude, e espalharam a mídia com as indústrias da pornografia, do tráfico e da fé. Mas estamos ainda em 1967, quando um grupo britânico ainda acreditava que a solução estava sob o sol de São Francisco, os Flower Pot Men, cujo nome já era bem significativo (flower pot pode ser traduzido como vaso de flores ou flor da maconha). O single Let´s Go To San Francisco tinha no lado B a continuação do lado A, e foi o único lançado pelo grupo. Sempre tive a curiosidade de saber como estavam estes ex-hippies: internados num hospício? Isolados numa caverna? Nada disto: são simpáticos vovôs rotundos, como eu.

 

In the mid-60’s a movement was born in the Occident, that would shape the world as we know. Youngsters no longer believed in the promises of the system and would venture new conceptions. Instead of making war, make love; the drug would open the doors of perception; Jesus’ teachings seen through a new angle: the Temple traders would take advantage on the lack of structure of the naive, spreading the media with the industries of porn, drug traffic and faith. But we’re still in 1967, when a British group still believed the solution was under the sun of San Francisco, the Flower Pot Men, whose name was already of significance. The single Let´s Go To San Francisco had in side B the continuation of side A, and was the only released by the band. I’ve always had the curiosity to know how these former hippies are now: maybe interns of a funny farm? Isolated in a cave? No way: just lovable chubby grandads like me.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - BLONDIE

O final dos anos 70 trouxe uma forte onda de nostalgia, impulsionada por alguns clássicos, como American Graffiti e Grease. Estes musicais não só traziam de volta o charme dos anos de otimismo, como permitiam aos jovens conhecer os ídolos dos seus pais. O New Wave poderia ter sido um dos ramos do rock vinte anos antes. Este The Tide Is High é um belo exemplo do que pode fazer um “banho de loja” num estilo tão apreciado.

 

The end of the 70’s brought a strong wave of nostalgia, surfing some movie classics, as American Graffiti and Grease. These musicals not only brought back the irresistible charm of the years of optimism, but also allowed the young to know their parent’s idols. The New Wave could have been born twenty years before This The Tide Is High is a very good example of refurbishing such a beloved style.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - THE CASCADES

Se eu apresentar os seguintes nomes: John Gummoe Eddie Snyder, David Szabo, Dave Stevens, e Dave Wilson; você saberia que banda é esta? Não tem problema: eu também não saberia até consultar a Internet. São os Cascades, todos da Marinha e fãs dos Beach Boys. Em 1962 eles se juntaram para serem lembrados por um sucesso só, Rhythm of the Rain. No Brasil, esta música ganhou uma versão do Demétrius chamada O Ritmo da Chuva.

They are The Cascades, Navy men and Beach Boys fans. In 1962 they’d join to be remembered as a one-hit group, Rhythm of the Rain. In Brasil, this song got a version sung by Demétrius called O Ritmo da Chuva.

FESTIVAL DE ROCK - THE FIFTH ESTATE

Em 1964 eles se chamavam D-Men e faziam parte do movimento rock de garagem. Rick Engler, Ken Evans, Doug Ferrara, Wayne Wadhams, Bill Shute e a partir de 1966, contando com Chuck LeGros e Bobby Klein, acabaram influindo até no estilo louco dos Beatles. Em homenagem a este Maio sacolejado, postamos o clássico Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead por Harold Arlen.

 

In 1964 the were called D-Men and were Just another garage rock band. Rick Engler, Ken Evans, Doug Ferrara, Wayne Wadhams, Bill Shute and from 1966 on, counting with Chuck LeGros and Bobby Klein, they even influenced the loony Beatles style.
