FESTIVAL DE ROCK - PETER, PAUL AND MARY

Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey e Mary Travers se juntaram em 1961 para formar o grupo mais brilhante do folk americano. Três estrelas brilhando separadamente e mais ainda em conjunto. Seu primeiro álbum ficou dois meses no topo da lista, mas não era de se admirar: um violão acústico e três vozes a serviço da alma americana, lançando hits que ficariam para sempre, como If I Had a Hammer, Where Have All The Flowers Gone e 500 Miles. Eles eram não só os porta-vozes de Bob Dylan, como a voz dos que se opunham à guerra cruel que ceifava milhares de vidas no Vietnã. Entre todos os seus álbuns não se encontra uma faixa “mais ou menos”; eles buscavam a excelência o tempo todo. Enturmados com os artistas cheios de alma que reagiam ao consumismo barato, nos surpreenderam com este hino ao rock and roll, e a sua mensagem nas entrelinhas. Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey and Mary Travers joined in 1961 to be the most brilliant folk group ever. Three stars shining separately and still more when together. Their first album hit the top of the list for two months, but no wonder: an acoustic guitar and three voices at the service of the American soul, releasing hits to last forever, such as If I Had a Hammer, Where Have All The Flowers Gone and 500 Miles. They were not just Bob Dylan’s spokesmen, but all the voices that opposed the cruel war that reaped thousands of lives in Vietnam. Among all their albums one couldn’t find a “nice” track; they’d excel all the time. Friends of the red-white-and-blue true artists that reacted against the cheap consumism, they surprised us releasing this simple rock and roll anthem, and its message between the lines. Observe in the clip that Mary Travers do something that not even far reminds rock dancing... I included two other interpretations of I Dig Rock’n’Roll Music, one of them by Cass Elliot and Sammy Davis Jr (why doesn’t she mention the Mamas and Papas?) and a loony “op” version by the always fantastic Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence.
