The International Song Festival of Rio allowed some friends and I to get near to the greatest performers in the world. In 1969, for instance, we were kindly received by a genius composer, Jimmy Webb, already known for Up Up And Away, and McArthur Park. He was there presenting a song to be a hit, Evie. In his room we met gorgeous Carol Lynley and one of the Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley, who would sing Evie with a roaring success. The Righteous Brothers came to mainstream with a new kind of sound Phil Spector had developed in his studio, the wall of sound. This happened to be just an accoustics flaw, an echo that multiplied the sound, turning it thick and rich. The song was You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling and it scored number one quick and steadily. Bill would also cover the interpretation of the Platters for Unchained Melody, becoming the film Ghost love theme. Please watch.
