No fim dos anos 80 o rock havia se distanciado tanto de suas origens, que o som do Dire Straits foi logo acolhido e aclamado. Mark e David Knopfler se juntaram a John Illsley e Pick Withers entre 1977 e 1994, quando Mark sentiu que se fazia necessário dissolver o Dire Straits e iniciar uma carreira solo.
