Estávamos às portas do primeiro grande conflito em escala planetária. Já se previa o fim do mundo. E ele veio! O fim do velho mundo. Os países se dividiam; se reorganizavam. Quem era italiano nascido em Nice como Garibaldi, agora era francês. Mas quem nascia em Veneza, não era mais austríaco, era italiano. Os pobres atlas tinham de serem corrigidos todos os anos! Reis e czares caíam; impérios se despedaçavam; tiranos subiam ao poder nos braços do povo. Este clima de expectativa do “novo” tinha de influenciar os artistas em todas as áreas. Na música, o grande rompimento tinha um nome: Stravinsky. Associado aos bem sucedidos Ballets Russes, Igor teve um campo fértil para as suas dissonâncias. Viveu muito, de 1882 a 1971, e também criou muito, sempre surpreendendo com suas obras novas.
We were on the verge of the first great conflict in planetary scale. People predicted the end of the world. And it happened! The end of an old world. Countries broke up only to reorganize in a different way. Who was an Italian born in Nice like Garibaldi, would now be French. But who was born in Venice, would no longer be an Austrian, but Italian. The miserable maps had to be redrawn every year! Kings and Tsars fell from the throne; empires faced ruin; tyrants raised to power in the arms of the people. This expectant atmosphere of what’s “new” had to influence the artists in all areas. In Music, the great rupture had a name: Stravinsky. Linked to the well succeeded Ballets Russes, Igor had a fertile field to develop his dissonances. A long life, from 1882 to 1971, and an extensive work, always surprising us with every new masterpiece.
